Huey Thomas Bennett, Sr., a native of Zachary, Louisiana and longtime resident of Meriden, CT, was born on June 16, 1948, to the late Marion and Patience Shanklin Bennett. He departed this life on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, in Hartford, CT.
Huey, affectionately known as “Goodaman”, was reared in a Christian home and accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age. He was baptized at Philadelphia Baptist Church by the late Pastor C.N. Burrell.
Huey graduated from Chaneyville High School in 1966 where he played tennis. After high school he worked for Pratt Whitney Aircraft, and later joined the United States Marine Corps in May of 1968 where he completed Advanced Infantry Training and was a Vietnam Veteran. During his service he received the Vietnam Service medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and national Defense Service Medal.
Huey leaves to cherish his memory his four sons from his marriage to Pearline Johnson: Ruffin Thomas Bennett (Carmen Ortiz, Lizette Wajeh), Huey Thomas Bennett, II, Cleavon Thomas Bennett, Sr. (Tisha), and Marion Gilbert Bennett, Sr. (Scherrie’ A. Mangum); his brother Edward Bennett, Sr. (Jennifer) of Plaquemine, LA; sisters in law Edna Bennett of Zachary, LA and Catherine Johnson of Atlanta, GA; a devoted grandson, Huey Bennett, III; 20 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Huey was proceeded in death by his parents, Marion and Patience Shanklin Bennett; brothers Sterling “Son” Bennett and Johnny Lee “Skeet” “Honeyman” Bennett, Sr.; sisters Celia Mae “Nick” Bennett-Jackson, and Josephine “Mary Jo” “Girl” “Sister Baby” Bennett Dawkins; and granddaughter Imani Bennett.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 28th at 12:30 pm in the Chapel at Sgt. John L. Levitow Health Care Center, 287 West Street, Rocky Hill. Burial will follow in Colonel Raymond F. Gates Memorial Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. Family and friends may call Thursday before the service from 12:00 to 12:30 pm in the Chapel.
