Roma LaVonne (Powell) Mowry passed away peacefully at the Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa on January 31, 2010.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Casey United Methodist Church. Burial will be held directly following the service at the Oakwood Cemetery in Casey. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dean and LaVonne Mowry scholarship fund for Adair-Casey College bound seniors. Please send contributions to the Johnson Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 123 NE Second Street, Stuart, Iowa 50250 and they will take care of getting them to the family (515-523-1200).

LaVonne was born June 2, 1928 and was the first of the five children of Burton and Leola (Hubbard) Powell. She grew up on a farm north of Casey, Iowa, where riding her horse to school and doing chores with her dad were two of her favorite childhood memories.

She graduated from Casey High School in 1946 as the valedictorian of her class. She attended Simpson College for one year to receive her teaching certificate. She then returned to Adair, Iowa where she taught 5th grade for one year before getting married. LaVonne had a love for literature and math, two subjects that allowed her to instill a passion for the written word and problem solving in her children. She continued to foster these skills in everyone she met, including children she tutored throughout her years in Casey.

LaVonne married Dean Mowry on September 14, 1948. They began farming together and raised 5 children. After Dean's death in 1984, she continued farming and raising cattle until she moved to Coralville, Iowa in 2004. Most recently, she lived in Altoona, Iowa, to be near her daughters.

Community service was important to LaVonne. While living in Casey, she held many offices in Eastern Star, attended and served the United Methodist Church and took her children to vote with her on every election, to name a few. Her greatest contribution was serving on the Adair-Casey Board of Education, filling Dean's position first and then serving 12 more years of her own. Together, they dedicated more than 30 years to improving the education system and accompanied many young adults on the annual senior trip. To recognize their passion and efforts, their children have decided to direct any memorial contributions to the newly created Dean and LaVonne Mowry scholarship fund.

LaVonne is preceded in death by her husband, Dean; her parents Burton and Leola Powell; her in-laws, Martin and Fern Mowry; and brothers Don and Bill Powell.

Surviving are her 5 children, Dee (John) Rogers, Dr. John (Kathleen) Mowry, Joan Coates, Joe (Sherril) Mowry, Tina (Thomas) Hadden; 12 grandchildren Kate and Paul Rogers; Dr. Jill (Adam) Strange, Anne (Ryan) Fisher; Jacob and Jordan Coates; Miller and Olivia Mowry and Jordyn and Kristyn Roberts; Jeffrey and Caleb Hadden; 1 great grandchild Piper Strange; her sister Dorothy (Charles) Varley; her brother Dave (Char) Powell; and many nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom will miss her greatly.
